Overview

The automotive industry is experiencing a major transformation driven by societal and environmental trends leading to an acceleration of new mobility solutions. As a result, automakers are facing new challenges to make vehicles more intuitive, connected and personalized.

To meet evolving expectations, Faurecia’s vision for the Cockpit of the Future focuses on providing a more versatile, predictive and connected environment that aims to personalize the journey and enable occupants to make the most of their time on board, and feel better at the end of their journey than at the beginning.

One aspect of this improved user experience involves the collection and analysis of physiological data on the driver and passengers of the vehicle. In particular: incorporating non-invasive technologies, such as sensors, that can detect outliers on signs, symptoms and biomarkers related to emergency medical incidents such as strokes, heart attacks, and diabetic events (e.g. hypoglycemic episode). Through detection of signs related to these medical events, there is vast potential to enhance vehicle safety for everyone on and near the road.

About Faurecia

Faurecia is a global ($20B) technology company that designs and manufactures interior systems, seating systems, electronics, and clean mobility solutions for vehicles. One-third of all vehicles produced globally contain Faurecia’s technology. Looking towards the future, Faurecia’s innovation strategies are focused on making mobility more sustainable and enhancing life on board in vehicles.

Structure

The Faurecia Biosensing Safety Challenge is looking for novel, non-invasive, methods of detecting abnormalities in vehicle occupants’ physiology — all with the goal of reducing emergency medical events and increasing road safety.

Specifically, this challenge is looking for hardware sensors, software technologies, or hardware/software solutions which can:

I. Detect at least one sign, symptom or biomarker* related to one or more of the following medical events:

                 i) Stroke (e.g. face drooping, slurred speech, dizziness, impaired vision, severe headache etc.)

                 ii) Heart attack (e.g. heart rate, pulse, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, cardiac troponin etc.)

                 iii) Diabetic event, such as a hypoglycemic episode (e.g. sweating, pallor, shakiness, blood glucose, etc.)

See here for more signs, symptoms and biomarkers.

II. Detect signs, symptoms or biomarkers in a non-invasive manner (e.g. no skin break, contact with mucosa, or any internal body cavity)

III. Have the potential to be integrated into the interior of a vehicle (see FAQ for more details)

IV. Have a technology readiness level (TRL) minimum of 3 if it is a purely software solution or TRL minimum of 4 if it is a strictly hardware solution or software-hardware combination solution

IMPORTANT!

  • The solution should not diagnose a stroke, heart attack or diabetic event
  • The solution cannot be a regulated medical device and/or technology

FAQ

The Faurecia Biosensing Safety Challenge will allow for exposure of your organization and its technological solutions to a multibillion-dollar global company focused on advancing safety and developing the vehicle interior of the future. In addition, up to three finalists will be provided with exposure to thousands of health and technology companies and investors at Toronto’s Health Innovation Week. Finally, the grand prize winner will be provided $25,000 USD, as well as the opportunity to develop future projects with Faurecia.

Click here for a list of example signs related to a stroke, heart attack and diabetic event. In addition, you can find links to other websites which will provide further information on these emergency medical events under our “Resources” tab.

The inside of a vehicle (e.g. cockpit) is a unique environment, one in which multiple factors can impact the ability of certain technologies to operate. For example, there are physical limitations to the size of a vehicle, driving on the road creates vibration, and a constant changing external environment can cause fluctuations in interior light and temperature. In addition, technologies that rely on passenger interaction (e.g. touch) must overcome barriers such as clothing, car seats, and shifting passenger position.

This challenge is seeking solutions that have the potential to address the barriers listed above, while still being able to detect a sign, symptom or biomarker of a stroke, heart attack or diabetic event. Note: it is not required to have already tested your technology in a car, or similar environment.

See questions 13, 15, 18 and 19 in the Submission Form (under the “Resources” tab) for the information we’re looking for on the potential integration of your solution into a vehicle.

At minimum your solution must detect one sign, symptom or biomarker related to either stroke, heart attack or diabetic event. You are also eligible to propose solutions which:

  • Detect more than one sign, symptom, or biomarker, or;
  • Detect a sign, symptom, or biomarker that relates to more than one emergency medical event (e.g. stroke and diabetic event)

No. This Challenge is only seeking solutions which are able to detect signs, symptoms or biomarkers related to a stroke, heart attack or diabetic event. We are not accepting solutions which diagnose a stroke, heart attack and/or diabetic event, nor are we accepting solutions that are medically regulated devices. However, you can submit parts of a technology which is a medically regulated device, so long as what is proposed in your application (e.g. software or hardware) is not regulated.

You can find a list of the judging criteria at the following link.

As described in the Contest Rules, you may only enter the Challenge if at the time of entry, you meet all of the below requirements:

1) your proposed technology, invention or process is a lawful, original and novel innovation;

2) the technology, invention or process is your own work and you have the sole right to submit the innovation to the Challenge;

3) you are a legal resident of the United States of America or Canada (excluding residents of Quebec) and are above the legal age of majority in their legal place of residence OR they are a company which was incorporated in the United States of America or Canada, and the person who agrees to these terms on their behalf has the legal authority to do so;

4) you accept and will adhere to these Contest Rules (available when you click “Accept Challenge” on this webpage);

5) you are not currently employed by Faurecia or a Faurecia subcontractor or supplier or MaRS or any immediate families (i.e. their spouses, siblings, children, spouses’ parents and the spouses of those individuals) or household members (related or not) of Faurecia, a Faurecia subcontractor or supplier, or MaRS, and anyone otherwise connected with the Competition; and

6) if chosen as the winner of the Competition, you have the legal right to grant all required licenses to Faurecia with respect to the innovation.

The innovator will retain all intellectual property rights to their proposed technology, invention or process. For more details on intellectual property rights, please see the Contest Rules for more information.

No. All submissions are kept private and no details are shared with other competitors.

Only one submission is allowed per organization/team. It is up to your discretion to decide which solution to submit. Please note, however, that one solution can involve multiple technologies (e.g. a hardware and software component).
