INTERACT (INTErventions, Research and Action in Cities Team) is a multidisciplinary research team from multiple universities that studies the impact of urban form interventions on physical activity, well-being, and social participation.
For the Healthy Behaviour Data Challenge (HBDC), INTERACT developed a methodological toolkit which used machine learning on smartphone sensor data to predict physical activity volume, intensity and transportation mode. This toolkit represents a first step in building a smartphone-based surveillance tool for physical activity in Canada, which has the potential for large-scale population measurement and surveillance at low cost.
