The Problem
In Canada, there are many people with disabilities that can, and want to work. Unfortunately, they don’t always get the chance to do so. Barriers can stand in the way of finding meaningful work. Meaningful work is work that:
- Gives purpose
- Allows people to follow their interests, or achieve their goals
According to Statistics Canada[1]:
80 out of every 100 people that are non-disabled, and between ages 25 and 64, are working.
59 out of every 100 people with a disability between ages 25 and 64 are working.
40 out of every 100 people with a disability that are able to work can’t find the right work for them.
It has been shown that companies benefit from people with disabilities on their team[2].
However, many people with disabilities still cannot find the job that best matches their skills and interests.
What are we asking for?
MaRS and CIBC are looking for major barriers faced by people with disabilities in finding meaningful work, so that we can launch competitions to find solutions.
We would like people to draw from experience when submitting their ideas.
Submit barriers that when solved:
- Will help make Canada more accessible,
- Will include more people with disabilities in the workforce

Judging & Prizing
All eligible submissions will be entered into a raffle.
20 participants will receive prizes of $250.
Please see the contest rules for more information about prizes.
Selected barriers will be chosen by members of the MaRS & CIBC teams, and a panel of judges. This panel includes people with disabilities and experts in the field.
Each barrier will act as the starting point for a series of competitions to find solutions, one a year, for the next four years.
Innovators and members of the disability community from all over Canada will be invited to develop solutions that can best address each selected barrier.
Ideas will be selected for these competitions based on:
- impact on finding and keeping meaningful work
- impact on people with different types of disabilities
- impact on people with diverse backgrounds
